SUMMARY:

The Psychiatrist is an at-will position that reports to the Director of Medical Services. This position will provide co-occurring psychiatric/substance use/medical evaluation and treatment to children and adults in crisis.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provide psychiatric services to children and adults through psychiatric evaluation, medication review and prescription, consultation to staff/family members/provider network, etc. As a provider for our acute psychiatric service OACIS, the psychiatric evaluations are geared towards making recommendations related to criteria of medical necessity for an appropriate level of care. The psychiatrist also provide active psychiatric treatment to individuals while they are on the premises for our various programs; Evaluate the individual's medication needs and write a prescription to start medically necessary medications for people who have been authorized by licensed master clinician or provider to the crisis residential unit; Ensure timely signed documentation, which meets internal and external accreditation standards; Comply with all Common Ground policies and procedures.

RELATED JOB FUNCTIONS:

Collaborate as a member of the interdisciplinary team; Participate in medical staff peer review activities; Assist in the investigation of recipient rights complaints, as necessary; Assist in the appeal process to third party payers when denial of payment is received; Assist in staff development activities on a case-by-case basis during the evaluation process, as requested; mentor and supervise Psychiatric residents and educate medical students, Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISION: Psychiatric Residents and Medical students (optional, but highly desirable)

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Psychiatric symptomatology and developmental disabilities in children, adolescents and adults
  • Community support system
  • Psychotropic medications and ability to administer and evaluate responses to medications
  •  
  • SKILL TO:
  • Type, enter data and file efficiently
  • Operate office equipment
  • Interact well with departmental staff, individuals being served and vendors
  • Demonstrate proficiency in relevant software and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Relate to a diverse population which includes a variety of age, economic and educational backgrounds

 

  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Consistently exercise superior customer service skills with both team members and individuals being served
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary environment and manage evolving needs

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Board eligible psychiatrist, currently licensed within the State of Michigan to practice medicine
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in psychiatry  
  • Must possess a controlled substance license

Work is done in an office/clinical environment with exposure to computer screens; Assignments may require work to be done on an individual basis or in teams with members at various staffing levels. The work environment is that of a crisis center and may subject staff to behavioral and medical events that could be physically hazardous.

 

Other Requirements:

The ability to work various shifts and hours.
